Angelo (1894–1974)
Retrospective exhibition of one of the most significant Hungarian artist of the 20th century.
An emphasised element in the exhibiting and publishing policy of the Hungarian Museum of
Photography, is to re-acquaint the viewers and the profession in details with the revived life-
works of the most important figures of Hungarian photography. Since the most complete Angelo-
material is to be found in the Hungarian Museum of Photography, the possibility is given to present
all brunches of Angelo’s life-work, and to publish a monograph parallel to the event.
As a studio-photographer, throughout his 60 year-long career, he has taken photographs of nearly
half-a-million people, among which celebrities like Chaplin, Josephine Baker, Nizsinszkij, Isadora
Duncan, Picasso, Béla Bartók and many others occurred. In Budapest, he was considered to be the
Nr.1 photographer of the fashionable world. His studio hosted significant personalities from royal
families, as well as from theatres and music halls. That was what he earned his money with, but at
the same time, he constantly took part in artistic photographic exhibitions. Well separated in
time, 5-6 different schools of the universal photo-history can be traced from the photographs,
which are left from his works. Pictorialism, Hungarian style, surrealism, and non-figurative
photography are all represented within his life-work. His complete life-work could not even been
viewed by the professionals yet, but it is certainly almost entirely unknown to the greater public.
We are confident that with the help of this exhibition and the life-work monograph the process of
reviving can be started both in Hungary and abroad.
