Taken in Hungary...Specialties of Hungarian Photography.
A Country Mirrored by Foreign Photographers
"Before the opening of the first exhibition I was writing that everybody is interested in what neighbours,
actually foreigners coming to his country think of him. It is interesting how they see him, his house, and his
country. When Hungarian Museum of Photography was seeking if there were any other sources to provide a complete
picture of Hungarian photography than works of photographers born in Hungary - either living in their mother
country or emigrated abroad -, we found out that during the 165-year-old period of photography-history, no one
has ever tried to collect the mass of information, photos of foreign artists spending some time in Hungary.
After realising this gap we started the collection five years ago. Results achieved are far beyond our original
expectations. A lot of famous photographers came here to take pictures. Photos taken in Hungary can be found
among works of famous artists, like Henri Cartier-Bresson, Werner Bischof, Josef Koudelka, Sarah Moon. The
collection has already been presented in special edition of Hungarian magazine titled "Photo Reporter"
(Fotóriporter), a bilingual CD-rom was published and it is available on Internet, too. Since then a lot of
things have happened in the world, in our country, in the museum, even to us, but our research has been carried
on.
Now we have the pleasure to present photos collected during the last three years. Within few years we are
planning to have a book published including the complete collection."
