Picture and Text
Verbal as well visual signs on the same surface?

International competition announced by the Hungarian Museum of Photography
A person of our times orients himself within the visible universe using two basic strategies. He either interprets visual signals, and / or reads verbal signals. One can test oneself, and decide whether, when confronted with the pairing of visual and textual material, one first attempts to decode the pictorial signals and then reads the accompanying text, or evaluates the picture after deciphering the text. The majority of people obviously feel more secure beginning from  written information, but there can be others, who feel more comfortable with the opposite, reading from pictures. The phenomenon is the subject of research within several branches of science, but we believe that, quite aside from this, it can be interesting, startling and even humorous.
We were expecting to the Hungarian Museum of Photography’s exhibition as would be connected to the subject, exactly because of the submission criteria new or old, of any given size, created by any technique, artistic or just plain interesting, by a known or anonymous author, owned or found on which the visual (pictorial) and verbal (textual) material appears with equal emphasis, supplementing, modifying, perhaps contradicting one another. Simply put, any and all materials may be entered which are dependent on the juxtaposition of picture and text, whether the photographed text forms an integral part of the picture, or is subsequently placed into the picture or its intallation, or relates to the picture as a subsidiary text, or supplementary caption. Our initial expectations were fulfilled by the number and quality of the pictures submitted. The 103 participants (from 8 countries) answering our announcement have submitted more than 1000 pictures, among them many interesting experiments. Due to necessary selection 79 artists with 271 works will be displayed on our walls.
