Károly Kincses-Munkácsy Gyula: How Should (Not) We Treat Our Old Photographs?
CD-ROM, 1999, book attached with the same title
In Hungarian public collections there are ten millions of photographs from 1839 up to the present, yet,
there is not one collector, museologist, photographer, nor stuff involved in the secondary processes of
photography, scanner, operator, printer who is fully aware of all the photographic techniques they in
touch with, and of the special treatment demanded by the different techniques of photoproduction.
Until this book and the CD-ROM was published there was no such guidance to be found in a handbook. The
book, and the attached CD-ROM (by Gábor Nagy computer- programmer, Károly Kincses and Gyula Munkácsy)
summarises a basic knowledge on photo-conservation, provides practical help on the digitisation of
photographs produced with historical techniques. In order to identify the original photograph, the
viewer is guided to hold it next to the pictures presented on the CD-ROM. At the same time, with the
help of Gusztáv Nikázy, web-master and Gyula Munkácsy, the complete content of the book has been
presented on the internet. The book, the CD-ROM and the webpage together open the doors for the public,
to gather information, which was hidden for so long.
