Herendi Péter: Hommage à André Kertész
Catalogue, 1997, 28 pages, 13 pictures, bilingual (Hungarian-English), sold out
By the favour and with the help of the André and Elizabeth Kertész Foundation approximately 200 objects
made their way to Hungary from Kertész’ Washington Square apartment. A significant part of these
utilisable objects and nick-nacks are known to the world through a Kertész album, entitled From my
window. Using Polaroid technology, Kertész took photographs of these little glass-figures, ornaments,
which are presently to be found in the Hungarian Museum of Photography.
We asked a young, experimental Hungarian photographer, Péter Herendi to create a collection entitled
Hommage ŕ Kertész, to reinterpret the little glass-figures Kertész took pictures of, to put them into
modern context. Péter Herendi has proven an extraordinary sensibility for the installation of objects
into still-lifes, and for the recording of those with the help of special devices, throughout his young
career. He is exclusively interested in object-photography. Through his last works he was trying to
find new possibilities for the photographic capturing of glass-objects released to extraordinary light.
Besides the photographs of Péter Herendi, the catalogue also presents Kertész’ Polaroid images, which
are presently stored in the Hungarian National Gallery.
