“Pages from the history of Hungarian photography”
Károly Kincses:
Munkácsi & Munkácsi. Photographs of Martin and Muky Munkácsi
1996, 167 pages, 120 pictures, with English and German summary (sold-out)
The book pays homage to Martin Munkácsi at the centenary of his birth.
Without him news and fashion photography would not be at its current level of accomplishment. He spent
the first thirty years of his life in Hungary. In 1928 he went to Berlin and became the leading photo
reporter at Ullstein-House, hundreds of his pictures appeared in the best illustrated papers of the
age. In 1934 he emigrated to the United States, where the Hearst Publishing's “Harpers's Bazaar” hired
him. He created a vibrant, life-filled school with his outdoor fashion photos. His brother, Muky
Munkácsi (1909) learned photography from him and worked as journalist for leading Hungarian magazines.
In 1936 he received a contract in Hollywood and became a photographer for Warner Brothers studio. The
book attempts to follow the career paths of the two, the common features and the differences,
emphasizing their ties to Hungary.
